Try out these other great poker games and win big

Texas Hold’em is an amazing poker game. It has everything from bluffing and deception to subtle strategy. It is the most popular poker game in the world right now. If however, you have found yourself needing a break from old faithful, then don’t be afraid to try out some other poker games. Poker Ocean offers an excellent variety of other poker games that are definitely worth trying out. Read below for some information and tips on each game.

Seven Card Stud

Before Texas Hold’em became popular, this was the game to play. It by all means is still a very popular game, as you can find it at almost every online poker room and real card room in the world. The play is simple, each player gets two cards face down and one card face up, then a round of betting. Players then each get three more face up cards, followed by one final face down card. There is a round of betting between each card. Unlike Hold’em, in seven card stud, every players cards Is for their own hand. No community cards in this one!

You can take some of the strategies and tactics you know from Texas Hold’em and apply them to seven card stud. Like Hold’em, your first set of cards are the most important, it’s just that you get three in seven card stud. Here is a list of starting hands to look for in seven card stud:

• Any three of a kind
• Jacks or better split (meaning one of the pair showing and the other card hidden)
• Nines or better wired (meaning both pair cards are hidden)
• Three cards to a straight flush
• Three high flush cards

If you stick to these premium hands when first trying the game, you should do pretty good. Watch out for three cards to a straight or flush though, generally these starting hands only have value when they are in the higher ranks and if you don’t pick up a card you need by the fourth card, things can look pretty grim.

Omaha

Omaha is similar to Texas Hold’em in that there is a flop, turn and river that all players share as community cards. It is different however in that all players are dealt four face down hole cards instead of two and there are some mechanical differences in how many cards you can use. In Omaha you must use exactly two cards from your hand and exactly three cards from the board. For example, if your four hole cards are QQQJ, you only have a pair of queens. Since you can only use two of your hole cards, the third queen is useless and because you have it in your hand, it’s that much less likely to land on the board and get you three of a kind! You may also only use exactly three cards on the board. So if there is four of one suit on the board and you have another of that suit in your hand, a flush won’t work. You can only use three of those cards on the board! With Omaha you want to play starting hands that are big and powerful, face cards and aces! Here are some good starting hands in Omaha:

• AAKK and AAQQ: Obvious strong hands, two premium pairs, look to get trips or a full house. Either of these is best when double suited.
• AAJT: This hand is strong because of the pair of aces and JT offers very good straight potential. Again, double suited is best here.
• Four high face cards: These are powerful hands, just be careful you aren’t following with second or third best.
• JJAX: Basically any hand with a medium to high pair and an ace suited with another card. You have a lot of variety here and good overall hand strength. Again, be careful of domination and play in the right situations.

So next time you are enjoying some cards at Poker Ocean, don’t forget to take a break from Texas Hold’em and try out their other great poker games. Seven card stud and Omaha are both great games that you can take your hold’em skills to and be successful at.

Playing poker isn’t always about outplaying your opponents, sometimes all it takes to win is a simple look at your own game and finding ways to minimize the all too common mistakes we see over and over in Texas Hold’em. Without further ado, here are the five biggest no-no’s in Hold’em and what you can do to avoid them.

Remember to play at Poker Ocean using the bonus code DBLBONUS1 in order to receive your best possible poker ocean deposit bonus!

Cold calling raises

This is the best way to lose money in Texas Hold’em, simple as that. Whenever someone raises they are saying one thing really: I think my hand is better than yours. If you are not going to raise them right back, but you decide to call, you are basically saying that you believe them and that you don’t trust that your hand is better. So the question is why even call? Do yourself a favor and never cold call a raise again. This bad habit can chip away at your bankroll in just a few hours. The best way to handle a raise is to raise right back.

Playing above your head

People who are playing in higher limit games are doing so because they are good enough to be there or they have money to burn and don’t care if they lose. This is an incredibly dangerous situation to someone getting in over their head. If you are playing with money that you are afraid to lose, then you can’t be an effective player. Professionals actively look for people playing in games that are too big for them. Stay within your means and move up only when you are financially ready and you have the skills to win.

Bluffing

Bluffing is a calculated move in poker that is meant to take advantage of a situation. You can just bluff because that’s what poker players are supposed to do. Bluffing to often will give you a horrible table image and you’ll lose lots of money. Use bluffing to make strategic, opportunistic moves of deception at opponents who are susceptible at the time!

Playing AX

Getting out kicked is a big reason why new players lose a lot of money at Hold’em. One of the best ways to prevent this is by not playing every hand you get that has an ace in it! A9 is about the low end of the spectrum when it comes to playable hands including an ace. AT can even be a big trouble hand if you are not careful. Avoid costly second best hands by only playing your aces when they have big kickers.

Going on tilt and losing your mind

Now this might not seem avoidable, but it certainly is. The trick here is to know yourself well enough that when things start to go south, you need to take a break. If you find yourself easily angered by losing pots or trash talk at the poker table, then this might not be the game for you. The best medicine for a losing session is to take a nice break and forget about cards for awhile. Once a bad session starts, it can go on for a long time and pretty soon you have basically conditioned yourself to lose, and this is very dangerous. Set a limit for yourself and find a way to get your head back in the game when things go bad. Usually the best way is to step away and take a break. If your losing session just never seems to end, head back to those poker books and read them over again; it will bring the important fundamentals back to the top of your mind.

But there isnt anything wrong with my game!

Every poker player makes mistakes, no matter how long they have been playing. People’s mistakes are how good players make their money. Minimizing your mistakes and the losses that occur from them can be equally as important as maximizing hand value. Here are some mistakes that can be easily avoided.

Not realizing how strong position is
Position is one of the most widely overlooked portions of the game by many players. You will see players in early position raising or calling raises which does nothing more than put them in a bad spot after the flop if they don’t hit. Players also play late position poorly, not raising into limped pots etc. Remember, if you are going to be in a hand, the less opponnents the better.

Overplaying A-X
A-X is not a strong hand, despite how many people play it. If you are in early position with A-X and call a raise, you are putting yourself in a bad position if an Ace doesn’t come out. Even if you do hit them, you will usually have kicker issues, so a better option is folding to a raise. There are many tools to help with these situations, such as various online poker calculators.

Not knowing your Pot Odds

This is another very basic concept that many players fail to grasp. Pot odds is basically the relation of how much it is going to cost you , to how much you stand to win in the pot. To play pot odds correctly, you have to know your outs, and how much is in the pot. Again, using a poker calculator can help a lot in these situations.

Being Blinded Out in Tournaments
To many players feel the need to tighten up as the bubble approaches in a tournament. This is the best time to play your most aggressive poker, as you will find many of the players are playing timid and just trying to make the money. If you can beat up the opponents at the table and maximize your stack for when the bubble bursts, you will be in good shape to make a deep run.

Not understanding the concept of being pot committed
You have to be constantly analyzing information at the table, and realize when your opponent makes the mistake of getting pot committed in a bad spot. When your opponent is calling your raise for half his stack or more, you have to be ready and willing to play for his whole stack on later streets. Even if they hold A-2, and they hit an ace on the flop, they will be shoving all in, and your big pocket pair will get cracked. Be aware of every betting situation that comes up, and if your not willing to play for an opponents whole short stack, then folding before the flop might be the best idea.

These mistakes can be easily avoided by being highly aware of what is going on at the table. There are an infinite amount of poker tools and aides online to help you with your game, what you do with them is up to you.
