Minimizing your mistakes and the losses that occur from them can be equally as important as maximizing hand value. Here are some mistakes that can be easily avoided.
Not realizing how strong position is
Position is one of the most widely overlooked portions of the game by many players. You will see players in early position raising or calling raises which does nothing more than put them in a bad spot after the flop if they don’t hit. Players also play late position poorly, not raising into limped pots etc. Remember, if you are going to be in a hand, the less opponnents the better.
Overplaying A-X
A-X is not a strong hand, despite how many people play it. If you are in early position with A-X and call a raise, you are putting yourself in a bad position if an Ace doesn’t come out. Even if you do hit them, you will usually have kicker issues, so a better option is folding to a raise. There are many tools to help with these situations, such as various online poker calculators.
Not knowing your Pot Odds
This is another very basic concept that many players fail to grasp. Pot odds is basically the relation of how much it is going to cost you , to how much you stand to win in the pot. To play pot odds correctly, you have to know your outs, and how much is in the pot. Again, using a poker calculator can help a lot in these situations.
Being Blinded Out in Tournaments
To many players feel the need to tighten up as the bubble approaches in a tournament. This is the best time to play your most aggressive poker, as you will find many of the players are playing timid and just trying to make the money. If you can beat up the opponents at the table and maximize your stack for when the bubble bursts, you will be in good shape to make a deep run.
Not understanding the concept of being pot committed
You have to be constantly analyzing information at the table, and realize when your opponent makes the mistake of getting pot committed in a bad spot. When your opponent is calling your raise for half his stack or more, you have to be ready and willing to play for his whole stack on later streets. Even if they hold A-2, and they hit an ace on the flop, they will be shoving all in, and your big pocket pair will get cracked. Be aware of every betting situation that comes up, and if your not willing to play for an opponents whole short stack, then folding before the flop might be the best idea.
